China is the largest producer consumer of coal with 3.8b tonnes in 2020 and the largest user of coal-generated electricity in the world. According to Reuters, China’s coal output rose by 5.8% YoY in 2M23 compared to sales period last year. About 57% of energy consumption was from coal while 49% for coal-fired power. According to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), China produced 734.2m tonnes of fuel in 2M23, up from 686.6m in 2M22.
